In the Forest of Symbols / A game to meet each other

  • show 2018-10-13 > 2018-11-17

  • about

"Like echoes off and for a long time tend to a deep unity..."

    - Baudelaire

Do you want to be found in the forest of symbols?

    “Symbol” comes from Greek σύμ-βάλλω, «put together».

If you d’like to be found by someone who traces back your footsteps, the symbols you have left for him/her to find you, join us.

You can keep your name secret, or just a message, it is up to you. The important thing is that you disguise yourself. Because only the initiates, who are able to hear you, can find you. This game is about recognizing each other.

Where and how you want to be found it's your decision.

What can’t be reached by rationality and science, agape and love will find it naturally, let others decipher what you have hidden and only through a spontaneous intuition it will be possible to come to you.

Is there a code in art? No! Art is free. References, memories, colors, sounds, smells, fragrances, associations... thanks to their sensibility artists are able to make the forest of symbols, where they hide their concepts and their correspondences, understandable.

Everyone has his own code to communicate. Find someone who knows your code and knows how to decrypt it, because it vibrates within himself too. It's like a genetic code.

The genetic code is the set of rules contained in our deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA.

Communication is the center of everything. Art was meant as an instrument of communication since the beginning of human history, when cavemen started painting on the cave walls, matching symbols to objects and concepts for the first time. Creating meaning is an artificial process but communicating is an innate process.

Communication is an animal feature, it's pure existence and Art comes from the instinct of a direct grip on reality, a desire to reproduce ourselves in Reality and Beauty. So, the mission is to communicate with symbols, with images and alchemy that refer to other of ourselves.

Join in and lose yourself in the forest of symbols, an emerald dark forest, behind the shadow of an apparent misunderstanding and, let the your message be deciphered, look for the messages you have left.

Whoever finds you, he/she speaks your same language.

    Do you want to play?

  • about

Book is a concept, a format, a support, type of structure, a construction, it is a container, it is a resource ... ultimately it is an object and basically it is communication space.

Territory that has historically been occupied by the word, the artist takes, appropriates it and includes it among its own expressive resources. Experience your way by deploying personal baggage and unique creative skills.

Shapes, textures, texts, colors, objects, images, etc. All kinds of techniques and materials. The possible forms are endless.

By dispensing with the unidirectional rigor imposed by reading, the journeys can be surprising and more like our own world, infinitely complex, fragmented, with successive layers and mysterious folds.

  • extra

Artwork submitted by traditional mail won't be returned but instead another artwork will be sent to the artists.

Certificates will be issued to all participants.

A digital catalog will be published, which will also be available for download in PDF format.

A hand catalog will be printed for the visiting public with the list of participants.

  • Angry Old Man Editor #5 // a magazine of experimental art & poetry

  • show address angryoldmanmagazine.com

  • about

AOM accepts visual and concrete poetry, short stories, art, photography, collage, asemic writing, blackout poetry, conceptual writing, flarf, found poetry, spam lit, flash fiction, mail art, typewriter art, computer/digital art, etc. Please submit up to five works. Work should be attached separately via email. AOM accepts jpegs for visual work (no greater than 4Mb), and .doc/.docx/.rtf for text-based work. AOM also accepts audio/ video/animation submissions. Hypertext/electronic literature/e-poetry are also accepted.

Essays/non-fiction/journalism are (heartily) accepted (especially related to contemporary art/poetry). AOM indulges the non-mainstream. If you have something to say that bucks accepted (and acceptable) dogma (especially within so-called experimental circles), and is (probably) considered unpublishable by both mainstream and “experimental” outlets, please feel free to submit.

Experimental work only. Experimental=complete & absolute flights of fancy. Again, AOM indulges the self-indulgent, so go for it. Mags often say they want “experimental,” but don’t actually mean it. AOM wants your insane stuff, emphatically so!–the stuff that won’t be published in “respectable” academic lit/poetry mags. The goal of AOM is not to promote a house style; this is probably a pipe-dream, but try we must!

  • extra

AOM is open for submissions year-round.

Nothing previously published. No simultaneous submissions. Copyright remains with the author/artist.

Angry Old Man publishes 4x year.

Please include a short bio with your submission. AOM will try to reply within a month. Submit all work electronically.
